Imagine Porty Prom is a year-long project that aims to involve the local community in the creation of a long-term Public Art Plan for the one mile stretch of Portobello Prom. It is our response to the City of Edinburgh Council’s proposal to create an Edinburgh Promenade along the 17km shoreline of the City. We want the Portobello section of the Edinburgh Promenade to reflect the dynamism and creativity of the local community.
Imagine Porty Prom is the next stage in realising our long-term vision to develop Portobello Promenade into a site for the creation and presentation of contemporary public art. Above all, we aim to involve the Portobello community and the many visitors to Portobello Promenade in contributing to and commenting on emerging ideas. The year’s programme includes:
- Three temporary art commissions launching 27th March, 1st May & 31st July.
- Events and workshops including an Imagine Porty Prom event late August.
- The publication of a Portobello Promenade Public Art Plan launching in August.
- The project base until early September 2010, the Portobello Public Art House, situated at the foot of Kings Road, Portobello and open Thursdays, Fridays 10 - 6 and Saturdays, Sundays 1 – 6.
The volunteer members of Big Things on the Beach are assisted in achieving this by Public Art Participation Worker, Susan Grant, by the creativity of the artists we commission and by the technical expertise of public art consultants RKL.
We are grateful to the Scottish Arts Council Lottery Fund, to the City of Edinburgh Council’s Economic Development Department, the Department of Culture, Leisure and Sport and the Craigmillar and Portobello Neighbourhood Partnership, not only for their funding support but also for their commitment to supporting this community to realise its vision.
